The Western Metropolitan Region of Melbourne comprises six Local Government Areas covering a geographic area of 1,370 square kilometres with an estimated population at June 2006 of 639,000 people.

The West’s share of Melbourne’s growth has been steadily increasing since the 1960s, when it accounted for 14% of Melbourne’s population growth. Between 1991 and 2003 the region’s population increased by 1.6% per annum, double that for the rest of Melbourne. The most significant growth was experienced in the Local Government Areas of Brimbank, Melton and Wyndham.

Rapid growth is expected to continue and by 2030 the western region is expected to have a population exceeding 850,000 people.
